In the last 25+ years I have only read maybe 1 book that didn't have to do with learning a task or bettering myself. To take the time to read a book just for entertainment purposes was not in my daily time allotment time schedule. While searching for something else on Amazon the Cover art caught my attention. I read some of the sample and was hooked! I couldn't wait to come home from work and see what fate would befall the princess next. The characters were so well developed I could actually hear their speaking voices while reading the story. The intrigue, the mid evil means to which lesser beings were treated and how different leaders led their subjects or forced their subjects to be led were all part of this marvelously, well written and thought out story.
My wife was shocked that I actually finished a book just for entertainment purposes. Just as soon as my crazy schedule will allow it, I'm definitely getting the next book in the series. Oh and I also have read Ms. Doufour's prequel to this book, Bought. It shares more in depth character traits and gets inside these complex individuals heads and explains more of the why they act the way they do. Another fantastic read. Don't hesitate I recommend you get this today!

This is powerful, poignant fantasy expressed through many voices. Turbulent and intense, I found myself voraciously devouring page after page; hour after hour. Filled with emotion, compelling characters you easily connect with and an edge of your seat plot; I found myself yearning with the main character, Bethany, for more. Her situation prompted me to tears as well as spurring anger and despair; which I am assuming is just what the author intends. There is quite a bit of violence, which doesn’t appeal or seem to suit the otherwise YA feel of the story, but Dufour has set the stage for a sweeping saga and will draw you in with this one.
SELDOM do find a book that is so captivating that I can't put it down. But that's what happened with "Torn". It's non-stop action right from the start. I can't stand female heroes who just sit around waiting to be rescued. Bethany brings spunk and determination to a whole, new level. She's not so over-the-top that she isn't believable. For me, the most enduring character is Sir Caldry. Obedient to a fault, he detests the cruelty of his employers and himself for carrying out the heinous punishments they devise. WARNING "Torn" is dark in nature and the characters are often cruel, but considering they are iron-age aristocracy, all the elements are justified.
A powerful voice. Charissa Dufour's storytelling is masterful, as she binds readers in chains alongside her heroine in this break-out new series. The Dothan Chronicles is certainly a series to watch for.
I gobbled up Torn by Charissa Dufour. This well written, fast-paced fantasy is full of complicated and believable characters. Though I did want to smack Bethany (Ann) several times for her poor choices, her plight kept me turning pages. There is a bit of intense violence, so if you can't handle that, this may not be the story for you, but if you don't have a problem with it and want a great read, look no further. Huge thumbs up.
Warring nations, bitter enemies, and an innocent princess is caught in the middle. Bethany’s caravan is waylaid near the border after a mandated visit with her uncle. She is told to run into the forest to hide but gets completely turned around and ends up in the waiting arms of slavers. Bethany is soon bought as property for an enemy prince, Frederic. His father King Wolfric is a land grabbing warmonger who would use her existence for further gain, so Bethany keeps her identity a secret. Life as a slave to a spoiled prince can become dangerous, but she continually attempts to make small problems for the royal household whenever she gets the chance. One of the knights, Sir Erin Caldry, at first seems as vicious as the scars that mar his face but soon he seems to soften his attitude, though Bethany can’t trust a soul with knowledge of who she is.
The story is a true page-turner as the author describes some of the terrible trials of life as a house-slave. Bethany’s small tricks may catch up with her and it's quite possible innocent lives may be ruined due to her antics. Lots of action in this fast-paced adventure and I enjoyed getting to know all the well-drawn characters. Highly Recommended!
This was an engaging read, with an interesting heroine, in spite of some of her character flaws. The level of violence was well beyond anything I have ever read, and started to loose its impact over time. The hero / love interest, whom I wasn't really sure was a love interest, was not likable enough for me. He had likable scenes, and then scenes where he seemed like a completely different, much more stupid person. I think he could have been a Darcy with a little more iteration, but he wasn't my cup of tea. That left the ending feeling a bit flat and sudden, and I'm not sure why he didn't just do that 20 chapters earlier.

It was a great premise, though, with some great description and a very clear world. I will probably still try another book by this author, with caution.
I give this book two thumbs up, as an avid fantasy reader. It's always hard to compare books, but this would go in a list of my recommended books by Brent Weeks and Terry Goodkind.

Torn is a very intense book! Nothing is held back. Experience hope, joy, pain, and loss. It takes you through the pain of a princess, the wrath of a knight, the fear of a child, and the greed of spoiled royalty. The raw intensity of this whole book kept me reading straight through the night, and I am already anxious for book two of the series. Be prepared to wonder at what a human being can be capable of enduring!
