Squire Protector of the Small Quartet Book 3 Tamora Pierce Books

I love this third in the Lady Kel series. Truly great stuff, breathtakingly exciting and enthralling. I’ve always been a Beka Cooper fan, but Kel is stealing my heart. The ending in this book is just perfect.

As a side note, I noticed this was written in 2001. I suspect Pierce had no idea of what the terms progressive and conservative would mean in today’s raucous society. Perhaps she would have been more fair in her portrayal because not all progressives are good nor all conservatives bad, and those who think so are truly lost.

Squire Protector of the Small Quartet Book 3 Tamora Pierce Books Reviews

Keladry, now a squire, waits to be chosen by a knight who will be her mentor for the next year. She is impatient and a bit worried--after all, most of the other squires have already been selected. Will her gender once again make her life difficult?
This novel traces her life over the next year as a squire. And there is so much to learn how to fight in tournaments, how to negotiate the emergence of romance in her life, and how to deal with battle--and the mayhem and death that it brings. It has a rich detailed plot, with some new and interesting characters.
One could read this book on its own, but I would recommend reading the prior books first it will add depth to this one!
There are many things I like about this book, and some that I did not. This book is supposedly for ages 12 and up but there are some pretty mature topics in it including premarital sex and birth control. Parents should be cautious about letting their teens read this. You may want to preview it and then decide if it is appropriate for your children. Even reading this as an adult, the handling of those topics was off-putting. The idea that a woman (or man) should be able to have sex any time they choose without having to worry about the inconvenience or burden of children was troublesome to me personally. Aside from those kinds of topics, I thought the book was well written. The characters and story line were interesting.
The story is wonderful. Tamora Pierce has done it again! This is Book 3 of the Protector of the Small quartet. Keladry of Mindelan has been accepted by the Commander and Knight Sir Raoul of Goldenlake and Malorie's Peak to be his trusted squire. Along the way, Kel fights for justice, stands up for vulnerable people, falls in love. We get to see her funny and supportive friends and family, with more engaging and likeable characters. This time, she attends court to confront her maid Lalasa's kidnapper and must prepare for the ultimate test to become a knight - the terrifying Chamber of the ordeal. In the Chamber, Keladry must face her worst fears and stay strong.

Bernadette Dunn's quiet, slow and soft narration is soothing and easy to understand. I thought it was quite sweet and funny when she changed her voice to make it easier for the listener to identify which character's lines she was reading (and I can see why she did it). Worth considering if you love audio and/or Tamora Pierce's novels!
The third instalment to the Protector of the Small series holds it down against the others. Too often book series fall flat after the first book but not any series I've read so far by Pierce and this one is following suit. I don't like to give away story lines to books so I won't write any of it in here especially since by book three you should know the overall tone you will be getting into. The most important thing to know is that the third book doesn't suck. 😁
This is my favorite book in the series. I love the adventure and action. One of the most complained about things is that she didn't end up with Neal, but I actually liked it. Her getting crushes on many guys is realistic, and so is how easiy they fade away. I'll admit, her romance with Cleon is the weakest part of the book, but it's kinda cute, and doesn't ruin the book for me. I also think that what happened to Joren was good, and leaving him around would only be annoying, since he no longer poses a serious threat. I also think that Kel is just a great protagonist, since she is flawed yet still a great person. She is very different from Alanna and Diane. Unlike them, Kel is a person you could strive to be, someone human, withiut the Gift or Wild Magic or a magic cat or parents who are gods, just a strong moral compass and a few leadership skills.
I loved that she was Raoul's squire. He was already a great character, but got much more devoloped, and their relationship was reminiscant of Alanna and Miles's while still being unique. I feel like Buri is really underrated. She's my favorite, and we hadn't seen her in a while. I like how she also is kind of a mentor/parental figure in this book. My favorite scene is the the one where she gives Kel the lecture/advice after the trial. Sometimes I wish Kel had terrible parents so they could adopt her. My favorite part of the book was the romance, not the main one, but the minor one between Buri and Raoul. I already mentioned I love them, but I love them even more as a couple. They just have such great chemistry.
I recomend this book to everyone, just read "First Test" and "Page" first.
